Effectiveness of AI Pronunciation Apps

logo

Four AI-powered pronunciation apps—ELSA Speak, BoldVoice, Say It, and Accent Training—were selected to evaluate their effectiveness in improving the pronunciation of advanced English learners whose first language (L1) is French. These apps were chosen based on their popularity, accessibility, and strong reputation for leveraging AI technology in pronunciation training. The evaluation focused on both segmental features (individual phonemes) and suprasegmental features (stress, rhythm, intonation, and pauses) to provide a comprehensive assessment of each app’s capabilities. Feedback from 20 advanced adult L1 French learners, who participated in the study, is presented in the results to highlight the strengths and limitations of each app.
